How the fee is calculated
Fee = 10% ร price + $0.50. A $20 ebook nets $17.50 (12.5% effective); a $100 course nets $89.50. Compare with Stripe DIY (2.9% + $0.30) below.
Gumroad takes a flat 10% + $0.50 on every sale โ payment processing included, no monthly fee. Enter your product price.

Gumroad's fee looks steep next to Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30, but the comparison is misleading because Gumroad is the merchant of record. That single fact bundles: sales tax and VAT registration, calculation and remittance in dozens of jurisdictions; fraud and chargeback liability management; a storefront, checkout, delivery, license keys and email collection; refunds and basic support tooling. Stripe gives you a payment pipe โ everything else is your code, your registrations, your liability. On a $20 ebook Gumroad takes $2.50 (12.5%); a self-built Stripe checkout takes $0.88 but assumes you value the merchant-of-record services at less than $1.62 per sale. For most creators selling into multiple countries, it does not.
Etsy costs $0.20 listing + 6.5% + 3% + $0.25 โ 9.9% all-in on a $20 digital item, plus Offsite Ads can add 12-15% on sales they drive โ but Etsy brings marketplace search traffic, which Gumroad does not. Shopify is 2.9% + $0.30 via Shopify Payments on the $39/mo Basic plan, so the cheapest per-sale rate but with a fixed monthly cost and zero built-in audience: below roughly $1,000/mo in digital sales, the subscription plus app costs erase the fee advantage. Gumroad at 10% + $0.50 sits in the middle: no monthly fee, no traffic, full tax handling. Rule of thumb: Etsy for discoverable templates and printables, Gumroad for audience-driven launches, Shopify once monthly volume justifies owning the stack.
The $0.50 fixed fee is a tax on cheap products: at $5 it is 10% on its own, making the effective rate 20%; at $50 it fades to 11.0%; at $100 the product costs 10.5%. So push price points up or bundle: three $10 guides sold as a $30 bundle cut fixed-fee drag by two-thirds and raise average order value. Second, use pay-what-you-want with a floor above $10 to keep effective rates near 10.5%. Third, remember there is no volume discount โ your 10,000th sale pays the same 10% โ so if monthly revenue crosses roughly $3-4k, that is the point where a Shopify or Stripe DIY stack starts beating Gumroad on pure fees, provided you can handle tax registration yourself or via a service.
A flat 10% + $0.50 per sale, all-inclusive. No monthly fee, no listing fee.
Gumroad bundles storefront, delivery, tax remittance (merchant of record) and support. Stripe is pure processing โ you build the rest.
Etsy: $0.20 listing + 6.5% + 3% + $0.25 โ 9.9% but with marketplace traffic. Gumroad: 10.5% on $20 with no traffic โ you bring the audience.
Gumroad is the merchant of record, so disputes are technically between the buyer and Gumroad โ but the economics reach you: a chargeback reverses your payout, and Gumroad's terms allow it to recover lost funds (including dispute costs) from your balance or future sales. Digital goods attract friendly fraud because there is no shipping proof. License keys, download logs and email delivery records are your defense; Gumroad keeps those logs, which is a genuine advantage over self-hosted Stripe checkout where the $15 dispute fee and evidence burden sit entirely on you.
No separate international card surcharge is published โ the flat 10% + $0.50 covers processing on every sale, and as merchant of record Gumroad also handles VAT/GST remittance on sales to buyers in the EU, UK and other jurisdictions. That tax handling is worth real money: registering for and remitting foreign sales tax yourself costs far more than the fee gap versus Stripe. Payouts convert to your bank's currency, and your bank may apply its own conversion spread.
Gumroad pays on a weekly cycle with a holding period โ funds from a sale are typically released after a delay (about a week or more for newer accounts) to cover the refund window, then paid out weekly to your bank or PayPal. There is a payout minimum and no instant-cashout option. If you launch a product and need cash immediately for ads, plan around the delay: revenue from week one may not hit your bank until week two or three.
